Friday Find: “Scott’s Bar-B-Que” on Backroad Bites

Monk: South Carolina’s PBS affiliate, SCETV, premiered their third season of “Backroad Bites” by featuring Scott’s Bar-B-Que in Hemingway, a true mecca of whole hog barbecue. They chatted with Sam Wilson, brother-in-law of Rosie Scott (Rodney’s father) and current co-owner of the business as of December 2020. See if you can spot the True ‘Cue plaque in the video.

Description: Scott’s Bar-B-Que is located just a stone’s throw from Myrtle Beach, SC. The restaurant was founded in 1972 by Ella and Roosevelt “Rosie” Scott in Hemingway, SC. Pitmaster’s use the downhome technique of slow cooking whole hogs over a wood-burning pit. Scott’s Bar-B-Que has been serving the community with their own brand of love for over 40 years.

Sadly, for the second year in a row the Mallard Creek Barbecue has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus. The Mallard Creek Barbecue is by far the oldest barbecue tradition in Charlotte, so its a shame that the 91st edition of it will have to wait another year. Assuming that’s the case, I’ll be there but will be missing their slightly controversial version of Brunswick stew come the 4th Thursday of October.

Linkdown: 8/25/21

After taking the summer off to recap Food Network’s BBQ Brawl, we’re back with our weekly rundown of barbecue news. We start by first celebrating the fantastic folks over at Bar-B-Q King in Lincolnton, who we featured on the blog earlier this week ahead of their big 50th anniversary coming up September 1.

At the risk of repeating myself, its fantastic to be celebrating a milestone in longevity as opposed to mourning the closing of yet another classic NC barbecue joint, which Kathleen Purvis so eloquently did in a story for Garden & Gun in 2019 (third link). Let’s hope it continues to be more of the former and less of the latter.

Checking In: Breakfast Tacos at Juan Luis

If you’re reading this, its unfortunately too late to grab a breakfast taco from the Juan Luis trailer in front of Lewis Barbecue in Charleston.

Before it changed over to “JLs” after August 2, Juan Luis served delicious breakfast tacos with homemade tortillas made in the trailer unlike anything I’ve had. Of course, Charlotte and NC doesn’t have the breakfast taco culture that Austin or the Southwest has.

I had both the migas (crispy corn tortillas strips, avocado, pico de Gallo, eggs, cheese) and the toro (green chile beef, pintos, onions, egg, cheese) on my one and only visit and these tacos were life-changing. Particularly the migas, which I still think about to this day.

After a quick refresh, JLs will serve green chile cheeseburgers, green chile cheese dogs, frozen custard sundaes and margaritas. I imagine it will be worth checking out.

The Juan Luis concept will be transferred to Rancho Lewis, which is coming soon to the former Workshop food hall at 1503 King St in Winter 2022. For me, it will be a must stop next time I’m in Charleston.
