Friday Find: High on the Hog videos

In case you missed the link in our 12/17 Linkdown, this is the trailer for “High on the Hog” and an additional video on the packing process. “High on the Hog” was a multi-part story of “the journey of silky pork from NC farms to the world’s biggest metropolis.” The whole feature is highly recommended if you are interested in better understanding eastern NC’s place in the global economy when it comes to pork.

There are a lot of different styles in the United States, but the two barbecue heavyweights are North Carolina and Texas. Barbecue folks in Kansas City and Memphis are going to take umbrage at that statement, but that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.

– The Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, as well as the Whole Hog Barbecue Championship that takes place alongside it, will remain in Raleigh until at least 2018

Congratulations, barbecue! You are the pride of the South. If you think about it, what’s more American than barbecue? It was born and bred in the United States. And even though there are different types of barbecuing methods, preparations and sauces, which are very often hotly contested between states, at the end of the day it’s easy to bring together a crowd of family and friends when there’s a barbecue nearby. And with summer just around the corner, it’s time to pull out those grills and dust off those barbecue pits because grilling season is ahead!

– Not sure how long it’s been up, but the website for Ed Mitchell’s ‘Que is live and you can take a look at the menu here; full plates include both chopped and pulled eastern Carolina whole hog as well as chopped bbq turkey, brisket, ribs, fried chicken, and bbq half-chickens. The original opening was in April, but hopefully we’ll hear more details soon

Linkdown: 4/2/14

The NC ‘Cuegrass Festival will take place April 26 in Raleigh outside of The Pit

The latest update on The Great NC BBQ Map includes the fact that the map will eventually be able for purchase outside of the Kickstarter campaign; sign up on the mailing list to know exactly when

– Restaurateurs from Denver, NC will start selling eastern-style barbecue next month at a stand in downtown Belmont

– An update on the latest barbecue restaurants in the Triangle, including Ed Mitchell’s ‘Que which is set to open April 9

– Rocky Top BBQ Co. out of Monroe, NC will be representing NC in the upcoming season of BBQ Pitmasters, which starts April 12 (via bbqboard)

– Could Charlotte’s best barbecue come from a food truck? Restaurant Traffic seems to think so, specifically from Boone’s Bar-B-Que:

– BBQ is taking on Fried Chicken while Cheerwine is against Sweet Tea in this Southern Food Bracket (aka Mason-Dixon Madness)

– The latest brewdog at JJ’s Red Hots in Charlotte is a “BeerBQ” dog by Triple C Brewing

You reallllly don’t want to miss this one. Triple C brought in the big guns with ‘BeerBQ’. It starts with a big ass pork butt smoked and shredded to perfection. Then topped with a Smoked Amber BBQ sauce and finished with battered and deep fried onion pieces.  That is all. This one really doesn’t need any further explanation.
