Monk: A few photos from a stop at Buc-ee’s in Crossville, TN this past summer. Buc-ee’s is of course the Texas-based gas station chain with an almost cult-like level of following and support for its clean bathrooms, jerky wall, Beaver Nuggets, and on-site barbecue station.
Of course, Buc-ee’s is also known for their copious amount of gas pumps, nearly 200 in number.
Once inside, the Texas Roundup seems to be the focal point of the store, directing people to the team of pitmasters slicing, chopping, and creating pre-made sandwiches and tacos.
There is also a huge selection of both rubs and sauces for your backyard grilling and barbecue needs.
Even if you’ve managed to escape without buying food, rubs, spices, or Beaver Nuggets, there is a selection of backyard pits available from Old Country BBQ Pits as you exit the store.
Monk: Daniel Vaughn (aka BBQ Snob), Barbecue Editor for Texas Monthly, made a trip to North Carolina last week (with a jag up to Norfolk) to taste what the Old North State has to currently offer in terms of Texas barbecue. Long story short, he was “blown away” by the “staggeringly good” barbecue he tasted on this trip. The stops he called out:
For the Charlotte area, no surprise that he remains a fan of Jon G’s, but good to see Sweet Lew’s gets a shoutout as well as newcomer Union Barbecue, whom I haven’t had a chance to try yet. Dampf Good and Old Colony are on my list as well for NC.
You may recall that Vaughn did a similar trip through South Carolina and Georgia last summer where he praised City Limits Barbeque in West Columbia and Fork Grove Barbecue in Anderson among others. I would expect a similar story in the next week or so about North Carolina, and I can’t wait to read it.

Monk: In a truly terrible news, the general manager of the Raleigh location of Midwood Smokehouse passed away after being assaulted a few weeks back. Police said David “Davey” Millette, Jr. died Friday, Sept. 1. According to police, Millette was assaulted at 2 a.m. on Aug. 26 in the 500 block of Glenwood Avenue.
Sadly, Millete was just 27 years old and leaves behind his parents, sister, nephews, girlfriend, and an unborn child.

Monk: The cult favorite gas station/mega convenience store Buc-ee’s has been on my list of places to visit for some time now. Over Spring Break we just missed the opening of their first store in the Carolinas off I-95 near Florence, SC, and the closest locations of the Texas-based chain otherwise are in Georgia or Florida. Thankfully, gymnastics travels for the oldest Monkette put me unexpectedly in the path of an operational Buc-ee’s off I-75 between Atlanta and Chattanooga in north Georgia.
At the Texas Roundup station in the middle of the store, staffers in red shirts and cowboy hats were busy chopping brisket or assembling tacos and biscuits. While I was happy to stumble onto a Buc-ee’s, unfortunately my timing wasn’t ideal. Arriving a little before 10am, only breakfast items were available, as the sliced brisket, sausage, turkey, and pulled pork isn’t available until about 10:20. Undeterred, I soldiered ahead with both a brisket taco as well as a brisket egg taco.
Before I get to the tacos, I gotta say that Buc-ee’s lives up to the hype. The bathrooms were indeed spotless, and while a tad overwhelming, the store itself was a sight to behold. I didn’t linger too long but made sure to grab a couple bags of Beaver Nuggets in addition to the tacos. Next time I’ll definitely plan to spend more time in the store and will load up on more Beaver Nuggets as well as jerky and gummies.
I ate the tacos on the road and loved them. The brisket, while surely smoked offsite, tasted fairly fresh and was plenty smoky while the eggs were scrambled perfectly. Pulling it all together was a flour tortilla that was on the larger side and tasted perhaps housemade but may have been just a better quality tortilla than I’m used to. Would definitely get again.
Next time I have the pleasure of visiting a Buc-ee’s, I will try to time it better so I can try the rest of the items at the Texas Roundup station. A pro tip I’ve received is to arrive around 10:15am so you can have both breakfast and lunch available. I can’t wait to try that out and bring Mrs. Monk as well, who is dying to check one out.
