Super Smoke Off

It’s 9 AM on SuperBowl Sunday and Monk and I each have our pork butts cooking for the biggest competition of the day – the Barbecue Bros Super Smoke Off. People have been making a big deal all week about brothers doing battle today. And while we’re not actually brothers, Monk and I appreciate the support.

We’ll let you know how it turns out!

Facebook status update from Pitmaster Ed Mitchell

Happy New Year from the Barbecue Bros!

On January 1, Ed Mitchell posted the following on his Facebook page:

2013 is the year for new beginnings. I bid you all a happy and prosperous New Year. A few months from now we look forward to helping you cheat your diet just a little and toss those weight loss resolutions right out the window. All in the name of BBQ deliciousness and good times of course! The Pitmaster and Crew returns…thank you all for the love and support and have a blessed New Year!!

I haven’t seen anything about what I assume will be a restaurant somewhere in NC, but I will be sure to pass along any information I see.

Kevin Pang quote

Bad barbecue tastes like good barbecue if you’ve never had great barbecue.

Stumbled upon this BBQ Roadtrip Tumblr from Chicago Tribune writer Kevin Pang in 2010, and it’s highly recommended if you have some time to kill. On his second BBQ roadtrip (!!), Pang visited several spots in NC including Bridge’s, Allen & Son’s, and Lexington #1.

The five-minute guide to Charlotte barbecue

The Democratic National Convention in Charlotte may have been almost a month ago, but here is Charlotte Magazine’s guide to barbecue in the city anyways. It’s a chronological rundown of several barbecue restaurants in Charlotte as well as an interview with Pitmaster Dan “Boone” Gibson of Queen City Q.

The pitmaster at Queen City Q, Gibson, forty-five, grew up in Charlotte and draws from his heritage—and his family’s hand-me-down recipes—to craft his barbecue. He calls it “Piedmont style,” a mélange of styles from eastern and western North Carolina and South Carolina.
