UNC-TV’s NC Weekend visits the KCBS-sanctioned Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwndown in Rocky Mount, a “festival in Rocky Mount celebrates all things barbecue with music, craft beer and cooking competitions.” This year’s 9th annual event is happening October 7-8.

I came away impressed with Johnson Family Barbecue and also surprised that I hadn’t heard more about it before. So I’m glad to see it get some coverage from Bob Garner on WUNC-TV’s NC Weekend program.

This hidden gem on the Wake Forest Highway outside Durham draws diners in with barbecue pit-cooked over hickory wood.

Friday Find: Pitmaster Helen Turner Is A One-Woman Barbecue Machine

Another Eater/Southern Foodways Alliance documentary.

They said a woman couldn’t run a barbecue joint…but that was before they tried Helen Turner’s sandwiches. Turner has owned and operated Helen’s Bar-B-Que in Brownsville, Tennesee by herself since 1996, and amassed a loyal following due to her smoky cooking and secret sauce recipe.
