Photo Gallery: Behind the Scenes at The Smoke Pit

A few weeks back, Joey from The Smoke Pit in Concord was kind enough to take us on an impromptu behind the scenes tour of it as well as its neighboring butcher shop, The Stock Market. Here’s a few photos.

Check out our review from earlier this week here.

Photos: 86th Annual Mallard Creek Barbecue

A few photos from last Thursday’s 86th Annual Mallard Creek Barbecue, which I was able to make for the third year in a row. Learning from last year, I avoided the normal lunch hours and took a late lunch to encounter minimal traffic.

The barbecue was as good as I remembered, and I really enjoyed the Brunswick stew which I got two servings of when my coworker gave me hers. Admittedly, I’m no Brunswick stew expert but I enjoyed their version (for more information on the history of the dish at this event, check out this article). Looking forward to next year’s 87th installment.

Photos: Southern Sauce BBQ Festival – Charlotte, NC

A few weeks back on the last weekend of Summer, Charlotte held the Southern Sauce BBQ Festival in the shadows of BB&T Ballpark. The festival was a first time event combining two previous events – Blues, Brews & BBQ and the Charlotte Beerfest. A small-ish affair, it was mostly confined to Romare Bearden Park (where a stage with blues bands competed for a spot in a Memphis blues competition) and the stretch of Mint Street between the park and the minor league ballpark. There were a couple of the old standby barbecue food trucks – Boone’s (with a cool sign giving us a shout out!), Moe’s, Sauceman’s, Smoke & Go – along with some newer trucks I hadn’t seen before. While it would be unfavorable to compare it to the Q City Charlotte Barbecue Championships (which was held roughly on the same weekend the past couple of years but was a much bigger affair), it definitely was a nice way to spend a few hours on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Photos: Chelsea/PSG tailgate PLUS help the Bros pick out a new smoker

A few weeks back, an international club soccer friendly once again came to Charlotte in the form of Chelsea Football Club vs Paris-St Germain. So while we have varying levels of interest in international club soccer, Speedy (less interested) and I (way interested) took the opportunity to tailgate and smoke a couple pork butts and five racks of ribs. We think it was one of our best smokes yet, but unfortunately, we took a calculated risk to leave the smoker overnight only for Speedy to come back in the morning to find that it had been removed from the parking lot (silly bros).

So we turn to you, dear readers, to help us find our next smoker. For your reference, the model we previously had was this Dyna-Glo offset smoker.

What sub-$500 non-gas/non-electric smoker do you recommend? Feel free to leave suggestions with links and reasoning in the comments.
