Friday Find: “Henry Perry, Kansas City’s Barbecue King”

Weblink

Monk: A recent episode of the Gravy podcast featured Mackenzie Martin’s story on Henry Perry, the forefather of Kansas City barbecue but also a nearly forgotten figure until very recently. When he passed in 1940, his three notable apprentices went on to cook for the two most historically famous barbecue restaurants in Kansas City: Arthur Pinkard at the first Gates BBQ, and Texas brothers Arthur and Charlie Bryant, who created Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque.

Martin is a a podcast producer and reporter at KCUR, and an earlier version of this story was nominated for a James Beard Award.

Monk: Gina Stephens and Melissa Howsam of Raleigh Magazine take stock of the current Raleigh barbecue scene and heap praise on Durham’s Lawrence Barbecue and Jake Wood. They also discuss an epic barbecue road trip documented by the magazine and end the episode with a speed round.

Description: 2020 was supposed to be the year of BBQ in Raleigh—but, pandemic. 2021 brought supply chain issues, building and permitting delays, etc. Finally, in 2022, we are going hog wild as we are likely to see more cue shack openings than any year in recent history. Pig out with Publisher Gina Stephens and Editor-in-Chief Melissa Howsam as they chat what’s cookin’ (think: the long-anticipated The Preserve BBQ by LM Restaurants), a bingeworthy BBQ road trip and BBQ wars (tomato? vinegar?!).

Friday Find: The Tar Heel Traveler Visits Gary’s Bar-B-Q in China Grove

Monk: The Tar Heel Traveler Scott Mason recently stopped in Rowan County to visit Gary’s Bar-B-Q in China Grove near Salisbury. It’s been around since 1971 and similar to many other storied barbecue joints, it is housed in an old service station. Its decor consists of vintage soda signage and it even houses a few classic cars. I’ve yet to stop by Gary’s despite passing by it a handful of times, so I may need to fix that soon.

Description: It’s a popular barbecue restaurant near Salisbury. The inside is full of old signs and vintage memorabilia and even a few classic cars.
